Top Texas Tunes
Truthfully, there’s too many tunes about Texas for a short list. And all Texas tunes are Top Texas tunes since they are, after all, about Texas. That’s Texas tautology for ya.
That said, here’s a few of my favorites, starting with this morning’s posting over on YouTube.com/CasaDexter:
- “(You Ask Me) What I Like About Texas,” Gary P. Nunn — Actually, you could make a whole list of Texas tunes from Gary; my other favorite of his warns, “You can’t get the hell outta Texas…cuz we’re the hell-raising center of the Earth.”
- “That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas),” Lyle Lovett — “…but Texas wants you anyway.” Not everybody’s born lucky, but a lot of folks make their way here and then sport the bumper sticker, “I Wasn’t Born in Texas, but I Got Here As Quick As I Could”
- “Texas Trilogy,” Steven Fromholz — one of the very best, lovingly resurrected fairly recently by Lyle Lovett on Step Inside This House, but find the original Frummox version if you can for Steven’s rich baritone on the line, “Open the windows and turn on the fan cuz it’s hotter than hell when the sun hits the land.”
- “Waltz Across Texas,” Ernest Tubbs — Many’s a romance has bloomed to the sound of “I could waltz across Texas with you in my arms”
- “Miles & Miles of Texas,” Asleep at the Wheel — Still swinging in that old Bob Wills style: “If Heaven isn’t Texas, pardner, I don’t wanna die!” (More on Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel and Bob Wills next week when “A Ride with Bob” rolls into town with our old friend, The Bald Guy)
The list goes on forever like Robert Earl Keen’s party and Willie’s tour bus. Tune into Texas and the rest just comes naturally.
