We’re getting a new cat. Almost a kitten, but a rescue kitten from a no-kill animal shelter. So now we need to come up with a new pet name.

Okay, actually, we have. Several. Sequentially. So far, considered but discarded (at least for now): Zoe, Maya, Yum-Yum, Noodle…Right now, odds are on Mia although my wife wants to spell it with an “e” – Mea, so as to avoid thinking about Mia Farrow whenever she picks up the cat.

But you gotta be careful in naming a pet before you get to know it much. We once got a kitty that had impressed us mightily with its calm demeanor. Accordingly, we named this cat Guinnan, for the exceedingly serene intergalactic bartender played by Whoopi Goldberg on Star Trek: The Next Generation. (That character actually named after a famous saloon keeper named Texas Guinnan). Well, our cute little calm kitty changed dramatically when she met our other cats. Soon, her almost zen-like quietude gave way to an almost feral nature and we hardly ever saw this cat indoors after that, as it ran away from the other cats and us as well for all the long years of its life.

So, for now the coming kitty is pre-named Mia or Mea (but not Yum-Yum or Noodle – those only got one vote each). But we shall see.
